Shelley McBain

Graduating with a degree in Fine Art in 2013. A personal project to 'get back to basics' with a series of drawings was launched and is still on-going as Shelley strives to pinpoint the moment when something sweet turns sickly or sinister.

I specialise in traditional drawing methods with acute attention to detail. Drawings are made in graphite, coloured pencil, charcoal, pastels, inks and acrylics. The simple and austere nature of these tools relates to the subject matter of my works sympathetically. Often walking a thin line between parody or pastiche of Romanticism the subject matter of my artwork is essentially nostalgic with a creepy-cute paradox. I aim to recapture the light and dark side of the imagination and make it relevant incorporating an amalgam of kitsch, Victoriana, Art Nouveau, tattoo design, and anime.
