This design is imitating the typical floral goldwork swirl embroidery which is so typical for embroidered late Elizabethan / early Baroque jackets. Notable examples are the embroidered jackets in the collection of the V&A as well as the one in the MET museum. The fabric design was on a jacket which was originally owned and worn by Margaret Layton (1579–1641). Embroidered linen jackets were worn as informal dress, and were particularly popular among wealthy women in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.
