Embroidery Production Manager

Overall Purpose of the role

West London production facility Contrado is successfully active in the B2C and B2B supply of creative custom fashion clothing printed and manufactured on demand. We are expanding this offering with embroidery and an in-house production facility. The Embroidery Production Manager is responsible for supervising all aspects of the company’s embroidery facility within the London HQ. This position will report to New Product Development Operations and directly supervise a staff of Embroidery Operators within the customisation facility. The purpose of this position is to produce the finished goods and provide skilled “on-the-floor” decision-making and production planning responsibility in the embroidery division.

Initially the Embroidery Manager and team will be reporting to our Product Development Team until such a time that it is fully operational in its own right.

Your opening tasks will be to complete the detailed research into processes, techniques, planning and installation procedures for state-of-the-art embroidery production. Our budget for this dept will be progressive, for the best equipment and highest standards. Phase 1 will also include the hiring of operator staff to build out the team. We expect to start testing production operations end of Q1 and in commercial production Q2 – 2021.

The successful candidate will be multi skilled, be adaptable and have the drive to operate successfully under pressure. You will already have experience in the garment decoration and customisation manufacturing industry and be able to demonstrate the skills necessary to both meet our customers highest expectations and to create and inspire a new team within the company. Specific requirements will include:
  • Fully conversant with all modern methods of operation within an embroidery department. Skilled in a broad spectrum of apparel decoration equipment and software including single and multi-head embroidery machines and digitising software.
  • Ability to fully understand and implement instructions.
  • Motivational in approach and able to inspire others within your team.
  • Totally “hands on” approach with ability to meet performance targets without dropping quality and standards.
  • Be flexible and adaptable to the need to meet deadlines, including occasional shift work.
  • Report to the business owner and NPD Operations

The successful candidate will ideally have 5+ years’ experience as an Embroidery Machinist plus 3-5 years’ production management or senior experience.

Role Overview:

Partner with NPD Operations to design and build a modern, automated, world-class embroidery operation that embodies the hardworking, authentic, innovative, and fun-loving spirit of our company and culture.

Recruit talent to run machines and manufacture high-quality accessories and garments. Must have a deep knowledge of the technical processes required to efficiently operate all the required equipment and produce high quality embroidered garments.

This role must have a commitment to excellence in process and in quality and the highest standard of safety, organisation and cleanliness. This operation will be built from the ground up – so there will be a lot of hands-on opportunities.

Key Competencies:

  • Great people skills. You must be able to work with many different types of people (garment makers, IT, QC, packing dept, Factory Manager, finance, admin and business owner), quickly translate industry best practices into solid, consistent, and repeatable processes while creating a teamwork environment where everyone feels part of something special and embodies our fun-loving culture.
  • Attention to detail and vision to build entire operation is paramount. You must be able to take departmental visions and turn them into an organised plan with actionable items and due dates. You must be service oriented for our customers but also internally for our staff partnerships. You must be deadline and workflow focused with a passion for each and every single customer order and instil that “do it right the first time” mentality.
  • Technical Experience. You must understand the technical side of the production, as well as overall business model.
  • Training. You must have a high level of detail for taking a finished process and cascading the workings of that process to teams. You must have experience creating and managing embroidery teams.
  • Analytical mind. You need to review embroidery production and expand on the processes that are working, improve upon the processes that need improving.
  • Big picture minded with an eye on the business profitability. You must be cost focused while at the same time able to build a rapidly scalable operation.
  • Quality oriented to make the best. Every product, accessory or garment matters and you must motivate the team to care lovingly for each product. Reduce and remove inefficiency and waste, come up with ideas for recycling and waste by-product.
  • Metric Driven. You must develop metrics that gauge the operation. Your previous experience will help determine useful metrics will be both operational and financial representations of the performance of the department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Include the Following: (other duties may be assigned)

The Embroidery Production Manager will oversee all functions of production and quality within the Embroidery Department, managing dept production staff and coordinating the flow of production through the department. They will approve the quality of a design setup is machine complete and work with Quality Control to maintain the highest customer order standards. They will be responsible for dept cleanliness and performance and will instil these values in their team. We have about 100 garments and accessories that can be embroidered and we will expand this with new lines.

  • Responsible for the Production Planning and Execution of work for the Embroidery Department, reviewing work orders to determine logo, location, and thread colours.
  • Supervising the production of customised orders on the shop floor, following order production steps, establishing embroidery routines according to the production schedule, monitoring employee efficiency and quality, stock control, rota planning – all elements of a busy team.
  • Managing quality control by ensuring: correct machine settings and calibration, high standards and regular peer QC checks.
  • Accomplishing high staff output by communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results; coaching, counselling, and disciplining employees; initiating, coordinating, and enforcing systems, policies, and procedures.
  • Providing manufacturing information by compiling, initiating, sorting, and analysing production performance records and data; answering questions and responding to requests.
  • Maintaining a safe and clean work environment by educating and directing personnel on the use of all equipment and resources; maintaining compliance with established policies and procedures, daily audits of production floor and equipment organization, proactively addressing housekeeping issues.

Existing Experience Must Include

  • Preparing machines for each production run: hooping, embroidery colour(s), placement, logo file
  • Running multiple jobs on embroidery machinery in an efficient manner
  • Maintaining clean machines, storage area, work floor, production supplies and receiving/shipping areas
  • Managing operators, training, risk assessment, staff performance management, interviewing testing and hiring.
  • Performing basic required maintenance of machines and knowing when to call engineers

  • Hands on and get it right first-time approach with excellent leadership, organisational and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-motivated, positive attitude. Action and solutions driven.
  • Independent judgement in decisions relating to shop floor, workflow and personnel management.
  • Strong work ethic, including team motivation and goal orientation.
  • Effective written and oral communication.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft packages: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook. Comfortable with order systems, IT systems, stock systems, rota planning software.

About you…

You love manufacturing and have worked on high pressure environments with high standards and advanced workflow systems. You may have worked on promotional clothing and helped develop an embroidery department or managed an existing embroidery team. You must be able to operate a machine and speak to operators about the process and techniques. You will understand maintenance sand know when to call for the mechanics. You will need to meet deadlines and production scheduling.
