Custom Printed Upholstery Fabric

/28

Give your furniture a new look when you design your own upholstery fabric. Choose from a wide selection of durable fabrics that can be printed with your own art and illustrations.

What is upholstery fabric?

Upholstery fabric is the material that covers the padding on furniture, and it has the ability to completely transform a piece of furniture. With new upholstery fabric, you can turn an old, tattered chair into a piece that looks like it's straight out of a design magazine. There are many different types of upholstery fabric to suit your specific décor requirements, made from either natural or synthetic fibres. Natural upholstery fabrics can be made from cotton, silk, and linen, while synthetic upholstery fabrics include polyester, acrylic, and nylon. Of course, upholstery fabrics aren't simply limited to these compositions, but these are some of the most common.

The main purposes of upholstery fabric are to protect the actual upholstery innards as well as to look aesthetically pleasing. When it comes to creating a bespoke look, many people opt to have stylish fabric covering their chairs, sofas, and other furniture. Upholstery fabric is also perfect for giving old, tired furniture a fresh and enticing look, which can be an exciting and rewarding project. You can also use it for drapes and other decorative applications around the home.

How is it manufactured?

Every bespoke upholstery fabric is manufactured differently and has its own weight and weave, thus its own properties and strengths. Synthetic fabrics and natural fabrics are produced very differently. These fabrics can be woven or knitted in a variety of different ways, such as plain, twill, or velvet. Leather and faux leather are also used as upholstery fabric.

When you design your own upholstery fabric, we print it in-house at our studio. The way we print the fabric depends on its composition, especially whether it's made from synthetic or natural yarns. We use either sublimation, pigment, or reactive printing to reproduce your design onto the material. Each of these methods creates highly detailed and bright results, and the printed fabric for upholstery will have great wash fastness. You might not be washing your upholstery fabric often, but this also means that any spot cleaning from an accidental spill won't remove the ink from the fabric. Your design will continue to look bold and bright through the years thanks to our richly pigmented eco-friendly inks. You don't have to worry about the design separating from the fabric, such as by peeling or rubbing off, because the design will become part of the material itself.

Properties of Upholstery Fabric UK

Depending on the material, custom printed upholstery fabric can be extremely durable and stand up to daily use very well. Poly-based fabrics are especially durable. Each fabric is a bit different, but poly-based upholstery fabrics are typically...
  • Resistant to wear
  • Fade-resistant – they retain colour brilliantly
  • Shrink-resistant
  • Easy to clean
  • Wipeable and washable
  • Sturdy
  • Can be fire-retardant

Overall, natural fibres are not as durable as synthetic fabrics and require extra care and diligence due to their lower resistance to wear and tear. However, they have a luxurious finish and are comfortable, which cannot always be replicated perfectly. These fabrics are great for creating statement pieces of furniture that may not be used as frequently so that they experience less depreciation.

Advantages of buying personalised upholstery fabric online

With custom printed upholstery fabric, you can choose the exact fabric you want and have it printed with your design to create just the right look for your project. To keep the authentic feel of a piece that has been worn down over the years, print a vintage-inspired design to give it a second life. Or, modernise an older piece with a funky print that juxtaposes its history with today's style. If you purchased a piece within the last few years but your tastes have since changed, you can create a new look that fits with your updated decor.

Upcycling is one of the best benefits of upholstery fabric. By updating a sofa or chair with new fabric rather than throwing it out, you'll prevent waste that otherwise may have made its way to the landfill. Discarding just the existing fabric is significantly less waste than the whole piece of furniture, so you'll be doing a good deed by getting crafty.

Upholstered furniture is always sitting around at charity shops and thrift stores, but the pieces can often look dilapidated and worn. If you see a piece with the right shape and size for your space, bring it home and reupholster it! You can design your own upholstery fabric to match the decor you already have, whether that's with a colour scheme or with a fabulous print. Often this can be much more cost-effective than buying a brand new piece of furniture.
