How Your Custom Framed Prints Are Made
Handmade at the Contrado studios in London, your framed prints are crafted with the utmost care and attention to detail. Our team of skilled print technicians, designers and makers work together to print your artwork and craft a beautiful box frame to house it in. Using light fast inks, your art will have stunning full colour and exceptional attention to detail. It is printed with either a full bleed, or with the border width of your choice. Your art is then transferred into the handmade box frame. Once you have selected the size of your choice, the frame is made to match. This ensures a completely bespoke and perfectly made finish. We include a cord hanging and fixings with your frame, so you can install it easily at home.
We use light-fast inks that produce both beautiful, high quality detailing as well exceptional colour reproduction to make your framed art prints, UK to order. In order to keep it in optimum condition, we recommend hanging it out of direct sunlight. If your frame gets a little dusty over time, you can wipe it with a dry or slightly damp cloth.
Create a customised box frame with our unique service. Our online design interface allows you to not only upload the image of your choice, but actually decide on the size, orientation, border width and the colour of your frame. We create a back mounted print, meaning the print sits at the back of the frame, giving it a 3D effect. Take advantage of this design and upload an image that is full of depth and colour. It will look so powerful and bold when printed in the box frame, that it will almost look as if it can jump out. Make sure you opt for the border size and frame colour to best complement your print aesthetic.
Out of direct sunlight and inside a frame behind protective glass colour prints can last without significant colour change for 200years, black and white prints for 400years.

How big are the framed prints?
We understand that every home is different, and as such the size of your customised art prints is completely personal. Whether you are looking for a small frame or a large one, we have several size options, as well as different orientations (portrait and landscape). You can see the sizes that we currently stock above. We plan to add more sizes, so get in touch if there is a particular size that you are looking for.

It is so easy to create custom picture frames online. Our unique service means you can print and frame your artwork in one simple step. Once you have chosen which artwork you want to print, you can then select the size, frame colour, and border width. Our online design interface makes it easy to select these options, and if you ever need any further assistance, our customer service team are happy to help.
What will my print actually look like?
What your print looks like largely depends on your customisation choices. You can select from an FSC matt black or glossy white box frame to house your print, which we place at the back of the frame to create depth and perspective. The pane is made from an anti-glare acrylic, which is both durable and gives a beautiful shine. Choose the size of the border width and the dimensions to complete the customisation.

What's the best resolution to print in?
We print at 200dpi, which is a good combination of quality and file weight. Ideally, your image should be scaled to 100% at 200dpi, this means that no resizing of your file occurs stopping any interpolation.
Should I save my file as a TIFF or JPEG?
For multi-coloured or very detailed files we recommend using a tiff format, but they must be flattened. For simple colours and low detail files, a jpeg is fine.
Which colour model should I choose? RGB or CMYK?
We advise providing images in the RGB colour space. Specifically using the sRGB image profile, to achieve best colour results. What does this mean? In your editing software choose RGB as the working space, and assign the image profile as sRGB (full name sRGB IEC61966-2.1)
What does GSM mean?
Grams per Square Meter (GSM) is an international standard for measuring the weight of paper or fabric. GSM uses the weight of a square meter (1000 x 1000mm) as an indication of the weight and thickness of a given fabric. We class 20-100gsm as light (summer fabrics, gauzes and fine silks), 101-249 gsm as medium (most clothing fabrics) and 250+ gsm as heavy (upholstery fabrics, and other specialist fabrics).
What are the bleed areas?
When designing your product, it’s best to make sure that your image is slightly larger than needed. In printing, the extra printed image is referred to as a “Bleed Area” or margin, and it is removed from the finished piece. A bleed area acts as a buffer for slight inconsistencies in the manufacturing process. however, it’s important to fill your bleed areas completely, or you may end up with white, unprinted strips along the edge of your finished product.
Do you print on garments a customer supplies?
Unfortunately not. All our garments are printed on flat fabric and sewn into finished products, which gives a better, finished result and all-over print. We test meticulously so that we know what gets the best results on our fabrics, and our facilities cater perfectly to them. We do however print sublimation paper to order, so if you have access to a heat press you can press your fabrics or flat garments easily.
Can you Align a Pattern or design across panels of a garment?
We always strive for the greatest accuracy when printing and constructing your garments. However, due to unavoidable stretch or movement of the fabric during the stitching process, we cannot guarantee perfect pattern registration across garment seams. We are generally accurate within 2-3mm, which Is close enough for most patterns but may show slight issues with detailed geometric patterns.
Can I print my own Labels?
Most of our garments now come with printable label space for you to add your own company information and branding! If you would like to sew in your own labels, we also offer Printed Fabric Labels here.
How is your fabric printing eco-friendly?
With environmental consciousness in mind, our fabrics are all printed using completely water-based inks. This means no chemicals or solvents are used. Our heat fixing procedure fixes the colours and prints, avoiding the downsides of steaming, such as excess or contaminated water returning into the waste system. We have one facility in London where we conduct all the printing, production and fulfillment.
